Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say early analysis indicate the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
An important political figure stated the incident left him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he stated on a platform, referring to the killing of nine people by a gunman targeting residents of migrant background in five years prior.
