EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
