Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
