The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Among Music Fans

Marking 20 years after the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, giving players everywhere the tools to become rock legends. Not literally, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that someone who's mastered Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to match coloured notes moving along the display in time with a song. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the sensation of an authentic performance.

The studio previously tried its hand with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by Activision during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they laid the groundwork for an unlikely billion-dollar series that had a significant impact for many of the artists included, introducing classic bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, remembers the early financial challenges in securing the songs – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Even with the publishing rights alone, it proved nearly impossible. We couldn’t get bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, album purchases and radio play increased, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “Among the amazing things was how many parents got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational thing.”

Timeless Music Gains a New Audience

Irish group one featured act included their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls how the series revived older hits back into vogue: “The game provided a bigger, younger audience. Typically such music was seen as outdated material, however once it got included in the title and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the band's debut album was still not available in the US, meaning Guitar Hero served as a primary platform of discovery for the group as they went on a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on Never Too Late during travel, and some of them knew us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Music's heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in specialized spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and related stories, visuals and legendary status. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band more money compared to their records. It sold well over half a million copies in its first week, and demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% during an era when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed dedication among its fans. Earlier this year, a streamer completed an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem made popular by the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics but an array of customisation options. This track is difficult even in the hardest setting, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed it took months of practice of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you should use actual weapons and enlist,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band previously completed a profitable run when their hit appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that we were records were moving like crazy,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has risked eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the song featured in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “Previously I thought differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has a unique path in music and I’m glad we played a role in fans' experiences”.

Enduring Legacy of a Plastic Guitar

The best marketing, be it for cars, clothes or games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “That’s exactly what our team trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a music icon in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and they wanted to use technology to allow people to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, complete with a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have kept the community active, and there’s set to be something from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on its debut rhythm-based title. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Are gamers prepared to welcome a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“We thought such titles could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music that it could be evergreen, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t persist with new generations.”
